Description

ROUTE OVERVIEW Start/Finish: Whitehaven NX971 128 Distance: 23km (14m) medium distance with easy hills Map: OS Landranger 89 (West Cumbria) This route travels between two busy harbour towns along the route of Hadrian's Cycleway (NCN72). In Roman times defensive structures such as forts were dotted along this coast providing strategic viewpoints out to sea and supply routes to Hadrian's Wall. A fort at Moresby stood high above the modern town of Whitehaven, looking out over the Irish Sea, and the fort of Alauna overlooked the Solway Coast from Maryport. This route is simple to navigate, it is well signed along its length and can be followed without too much reference to a map. As it is a linear route the recomended start is in Maryport from the Wave Centre on Irish Street, where electric and standard bikes can be hired. It is then a short train ride to the route start in Whitehaven, before cycling back to the Wave Centre.
