Add Gisland to your Itinerary

On the route of Hadrian’s Wall and spanning two counties, Cumbria and Northumberland, Gisland is a small village with a rich history that’s still visible in the stunning surroundings.

Trace the remains of Hadrian’s Wall through the village and visit Poltross Burn Milecastle, one of the best preserved on the wall.

Find out more about the Roman soldiers who were based in the area at Birdoswald Roman Fort and see the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian’s Wall.

Famous literary connections and its mineral springs made it a popular destination in the 18th and 19th centuries as a spa resort. Early guests included poet Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott, who is said to have met his wife in the area. Local legend suggests he proposed at the ‘popping stone’ which can still be visited today.
