Northumberland

Unwind in wide, open countryside and on long, empty beaches; explore grand castles and ancient Roman remains, enjoy the bustle of charming market towns or the silence of verdant forests.

Northumberland's now peaceful nature hides a turbulent past. There are more castles here than anywhere else in England. Some are still lived in, such as Alnwick (aka Hogwarts School), while others are romantic ruins. These castles testify to the centuries of border battles with Scotland; Berwick-upon-Tweed alone changed hands 13 times before its final retaking in 1482!

Walkers and picnickers can enjoy the rolling Cheviot Hills of the Northumberland National Park and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the North Pennines and Northumberland Coast. The adventurous should head for Kielder Water and Forest Park’s mountain bike trails and England’s largest man-made lake.

Make time to discover more of the county. Drive across the causeway to the magical island of Lindisfarne at low tide, relax amongst the heavenly horticulture at Alnwick Garden, explore the wide valleys and beautiful coastline on foot or on bike, or experience dark skies and gaze upon the stars, away from the harsh lights of humanity.
