Adopt a Stone and help look after Hadrian's Wall

"Hadrian's Wall stands as a striking memorial to an ancient Empire reaching the limits of its power in the wild British countryside. Look on my works, ye mighty and enjoy the view."
Clive Anderson, Broadcaster

2012 saw the launch of the Hadrian’s Wall Trust.

We are charged by UNESCO with looking after the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site through the protection of the monument and enhancement of the area for local communities and visitors. We are also responsible for communicating the outstanding universal values of World Heritage and encouraging more people to visit Hadrian's Wall and learn about its history and significance.

Each year Hadrian's Wall Country caters for more than 3.5 million overnight visits. In addition to this many millions more come to walk in the landscape, see and touch the Wall and enjoy the precious environment that is entrusted to us to look after.

This equates to billions of footsteps and it is through the work of the Hadrian's Wall Trust and our partners that this global footprint is managed and doesn't have a lasting, negative impact on the World Heritage Site.

To help us meet the rising costs of protecting the archaeology, maintaining the National Trail, the landscape, and coordinating the management of access, communications, interpretation, and transport in what is an increasingly challenging financial environment, we have launched a fundraising appeal aimed at ensuring the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site's survival for generations to come.

Our fundraising programme centres on the www.adoptastone.co.uk website where people can adopt virtual stones in a virtual Hadrian's Wall. The target is to raise £200,000 per year through the campaign. That's a lot of stones, but with 3.5million visitors each year, we believe it can be done. The campaign marks the beginning of our 10 year, £20million fundraising campaign, culminating in 2022, the 1900th anniversary of the building of Hadrian's Wall. Our target is the figure needed to meet the rising demands on our work, and to fulfil the responsibilities of the site's UNESCO status.

Like many World Heritage Sites, we face the constant challenge of meeting the increasing costs of providing the necessary care and protection that will help us ensure that people visiting today and future generations continue to enjoy and be inspired by the Wall. You can contribute to this important work by adopting a stone in our virtual Wall. Go to www.adoptastone.co.uk and help us look after Hadrian's Wall.

As an adopter, you will receive the following benefits:

  • your personal message on your virtual stone
  • a 'thank you' e-certificate as proof of your adopter status
  • regular updates by e-mail to let you know how the campaign is going and how your support is improving the World Heritage Site

Every penny raised through the Adopt a Stone campaign will be ring-fenced in a trust account and used to conserve, protect and maintain Hadrian’s Wall and the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.

 Thank you!
